Most genuine recommendation happens in private messages, group chats and DMs, where no analytics tool can attribute it. That traffic arrives as direct and gets credited to nothing. Referral programs report around 20:1 ROI and a 15–25% sales lift precisely because they are the one mechanism that makes the invisible channel measurable.
Somebody screenshots your product and sends it to a friend on WhatsApp. The friend types your name into a browser. Your analytics records a direct visit from an unknown source, and the most persuasive marketing event in the chain is invisible.
Sharing that happens through private channels – Instagram DMs, WhatsApp, Discord, group chats, email between colleagues – rather than public posts with trackable links. It has re-emerged as a significant force alongside the growth of private brand communities.
The defining property is that it is unattributable, not that it is small. It is very likely the highest-converting channel you have, and it appears in no report.
The most persuasive thing anyone says about your brand is said in a group chat you will never see.
– The Antimony position
A private recommendation carries three things paid media cannot manufacture. It comes from someone the recipient already trusts. It is unpaid, and both parties know it. And it is targeted with a precision no ad platform can match, because the sender knows the recipient personally.
That combination is why referral programs report roughly 20:1 ROI and a 15–25% sales lift – the highest-leverage dark social tactic available to most brands.

A referral program is not primarily an incentive scheme. It is measurement infrastructure – it gives the invisible recommendation a trackable form without changing what makes it persuasive.
People share specific, concrete artefacts: a number, a comparison, a genuinely useful page. They rarely forward a homepage. The most-shared thing we publish is a real figure attached to a named engagement.
A large direct segment is usually not people typing your URL from memory. It is dark social arriving unlabelled. Treating it as evidence of general brand strength misses the mechanism that actually produced it.
SADA MEN's 286-strong ambassador program became the brand's selling engine – genuine advocates rather than reach, which is exactly the dark-social dynamic given a structure. We wrote about how to build one in The Ambassador Program That Actually Sells.
Byron Bay Bone Broth converted practitioner trust into consumer growth, with health professionals becoming the brand's most trusted advocates and driving referrals through professional endorsement. That is dark social with a credential attached.
Femme Connection earned 3,956 five-star ratings and lifted NPS 23 points to 63 – the public residue of a great deal of private recommending.

We can tell you our own findability baseline scored SEO 74, GEO 61 and AEO 52, because those are measurable. We cannot tell you how many enquiries began with somebody forwarding a case study to a colleague, and neither can our analytics.
The general rule: be honest about which of your numbers are measurements and which are proxies. A brand that only invests in what it can attribute will systematically underfund the channel that converts best, because that channel is the one that reports nothing.

Definitions. Dark social: sharing through private channels that analytics cannot attribute. Direct traffic: visits with no referrer.
